What is an IUD?

An intrauterine device (IUD) is a small, flexible device placed inside your uterus, and helps to prevent pregnancy. IUDs are a highly effective method of birth control and can also help treat several gynecological conditions.

Most IUDs release small amounts of hormones to prevent ovulation, thicken cervical mucus, and thin the lining in the uterus. Changes to your cervical mucus help prevent sperm from traveling to the egg effectively.  The thin lining of the inner uterine wall prevents proper implantation of the fertilized egg. IUDs are 99% effective at preventing pregnancy. They can also last for years, so they're an effective option for women who are not planning on having children immediately or women who have problems taking oral birth control pills

How do IUDs compare with other forms of birth control?

An IUD must be inserted by a gynecologist or other licensed physician. Once the IUD has been placed, you receive continuous contraception.

IUDs are effective at preventing pregnancy because they eliminate any opportunity for patient error or forgetfulness such as with oral birth control pills. Depending on the type, the IUD can last for 5-10 years, so you don't have to worry about renewing a prescription or running out of your medication.

Many women with IUDs also enjoy knowing that their birth control is 100% reversible. If you decide that you are ready to have a baby, your doctor can remove your IUD, and you can start trying to conceive right away.

Can an IUD help with other gynecological issues?

IUDs often make your periods lighter. Some women with IUDs report that their periods stop entirely. That means that IUDs are especially helpful for women who suffer from lengthy or painful periods. IUDs can also help treat women with anemia resulting from abnormally heavy periods.

Nonhormonal IUDs like ParaGard® are also available. These IUDs prevent pregnancy without the use of hormones. They're a great option for women who can't use hormonal birth control due to a medical condition.

Is an IUD right for me?

While IUDs are an ideal option for many women, they are not right for everyone. At Rejuv Gynecology and Obstetrics, expert physicians like Drs. Antonio and Alekseyeva will help you select a contraceptive option that meets your individual needs.
